Usually when people talk about control, it is talked about in a manner where you have only two options: let go and just let life carry you through OR take command over your life and do not let anyone stand in your way. Well, I believe life is complicated and a person can never just choose one option in any matter. We do not live in a black and white world; we are engulfed in the gray areas.
It’s difficult feeling like you’re in control when you’re a teenager; however, it’s even more so when you’re an adult. There are bills to pay, people to worry about and others to keep happy, jobs that must be done and present for, dreams to fulfill… It can feel like a lot on your plate and it may feel like all of your control is being distributed to outsiders, that being people or things.
However, all of those things that we feel weigh us down is what life has thrown at us. It is how we exist. Our emotions, daily duties, desires, dreams … that is what makes us human. As we try to attain the things we want and achieve some others, we find ourselves in the adult boat.
So, what does this mean? While we may not fully be in control, we are somewhat in control. God has given us freewill and we are at liberty to do as we may. Yes, there are outside forces, but we have power inside of us. We have the power to accept the gray areas of our life, grasp it and choose to act and continue onward.
How do we take control in a world that is uncontrollable? We find our personal path. Sounds simple? Here are some things we can do to help us along our cobblestone road:
BUY A PLANNER… AND USE IT
Write down all of the things you need to remember. Make lists of tasks you would like to accomplish. Keep track of important dates and appointments. This will help you ready to seize the day.
TAKE SOME TIME OFF; WHETHER IT’S A COUPLE OF HOURS, A MORNING, AN EVENING OR A DAY
Having some time to hang out with family or friends at your favorite place (strawberry field, aquarium, flower show, book store, etc.) changes your perspective. Sometimes life may seem repetitive. It’s nice to breakaway from that and choose somewhere to go you wouldn’t too often, giving you a boost of serotonin.
DO THINGS WHICH MAKE YOU RELAX
Read a book/magazine, watch YouTube videos/movies/TV shows, play your favorite app/game… anything that will make you feel grounded, when your thoughts are flying way above you. When you take the time, you will return to your life energized and ready to tackle any force.
CLEAN YOUR SPACE(S)
Make your space into your own. Decorate it the way you like and incorporate items which you love. Most importantly, keep it tidy. You would feel so much better and in control knowing where all of your essential things are.
ASK FOR HELP WHEN NEEDED
This one may be tough depending on the type of person you are. However, a way of being in command is knowing when you need someone else’s help. Just ask. Then, figure out what to do with that information.
Take on one or two major projects at a time. Do not overdo yourself. Prioritize. Otherwise, you may burn yourself out and completely lose control of your alertness and stress levels.
TALK TO PEOPLE YOU TRUST
Sometimes you just need to vent, which is totally fine. There are also times when you just want to relax and just have a conversation.
Let’s take the steps into the right direction and begin managing what can be managed, then truly uplift ourselves with the message: I AM IN CONTROL.
